The following rush transcript probably contains errors and/or omissions…On NSA, NYTimes Finally Gets It
Rex is cheered not only by the end of the week, but also by the NY Times Op Ed by the Editorial Board, finally condemning the NSA’s domestic spying. The editorial is couched in submissive vagueness on the issue of just how domestic the data gathering is. Still, it’s a huge leap for the editorial board to come out and say “this is just plain wrong, and there are dire consequences that will come out of this”. One dire consequence they spell out is a chilling effect on communications across borders. But it’s worse than that. The chilling effect should be on all communications. And, perhaps that’s the pinch and the level of awareness needed to generate some action rather than acceptance of what is more than “hair splitting” as the Times puts it, but plainly just lies.
